Soil : fresh garden soil (a humus-rich
layer of soil), pH neutral or acid. The soil moisture should not be
constant otherwise the bamboo roots will rot.
Exposure :: sun or semi-shade
except for the bamboo Fargesia nitida which prefers semi-shade or
full shade.
Watering: only during the first years
following the planting in periods of drought.
Pruning: the low-growing bamboos are
in general cut back to the ground every year in March.
Invasion: the Fargesias
are non-invasive (clump-forming) bamboos (pachymorphic rhizome).
low-growing
bamboos with green leaves are always very invasive.
On the other hand,
the low-growing bamboos with variegated leaves spread out very little
or moderately.
The Phyllostachys are moderately or very invasive.
In sandy soils, bamboos tend to spread out rapidly.
However, bamboos can be held in check by solid underground barrier
which can be purchased in our nursery.
Fertilizer: the most balanced organic
fertilizer (10.5.5) should be used in February and end September.
The leaf surface might be burnt by chemical fertilizer.
